Shiprepair and conversion a big earner for KT Hydraulics

Specialist hydraulic systems designer and manufacturer KT Hydraulics has seen its overall business treble since taking the decision to concentrate on its expertise in the marine industry.

With an excellent reputation already established in the marine, offshore and subsea industries, KT Hydraulics created a dedicated division to service the marine market just over two years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

Sales director Richard Ellis comments on the company’s success; “We really burst straight into the marine market winning a series of major contracts around the globe including the overhaul of the cargo and ballast control systems on four of BP’s ‘S’ class product carriers. Since then we have been contracted to carry out the ongoing repair of cargo and ballast systems onboard the Golar Freeze LNG carrier. This particular work is leading up to a full refit in drydock within the coming months at which point we will replace the existing mechanical control systems with a custom designed electronic system.”

KT Hydraulics has also carried out the installation, flushing, pressure testing and final commissioning of complete cargo and ballast control systems for a number of newbuild vessels including two of the latest ships commissioned by the British Navy – the Wave Knight and Wave Ruler, fuel and water tankers for replenishment at sea duties.

More recently work has concentrated on FPSO work, both conversion and newbuild projects, with KTH securing a contract to design, build and supply a ballast control system incorporating 19 separate units that each control individual valves for ballast on the FPSO – Belanak under construction for Conoco in Singapore.

The cargo and ballast handling system installed, tested and commissioned by KTH on the royal Navy's 12,000 tonne Wave Ruler included some 290 valves and over 40,000 metres of hydrualic tubing. The ship's primary function is water and fuel replenishment at sea for Navy and NATO Vessels.
